Windshield Chips Turn Into Cracks in Winter?
Why windshield chips turn into cracks in winter (and how to stop it before the first freeze)
What is Windshield Chip Repair?
Windshield chip repair is a process where a technician injects a clear, curable resin into a small chip or short crack. The resin bonds the damaged glass, restores strength, and stops the damage from spreading, usually without needing to replace the windshield.
What causes a windshield chip to spread in cold weather?
A chip weakens the outer layer of your laminated windshield. Winter adds several forces that push that weak spot past its limit:
- Temperature shock: blasting the defroster on frozen glass heats the inside while the outside stays cold, creating stress right at the chip
- Freezing moisture: water that seeps into a chip expands by about 9 percent as it freezes, widening the damage from within
- Road vibration: freeze-thaw potholes send repeated jolts through the frame and glass
- Ice scraper pressure: pressing hard over a chip can snap it into a crack
- Rapid temperature swings: days that move between freezing and thawing make glass expand and contract again and again
Why are winters in Niagara especially hard on windshields?
The region sits between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, and Environment and Climate Change Canada records show winter temperatures here regularly crossing the freezing mark. Each crossing is another expansion and contraction cycle for damaged glass.
Highway driving adds to the risk. Trucks on the QEW and Highway 406 kick up sand, gravel and road salt, which is why many drivers notice new rock chips between November and March.
Can a windshield chip be repaired before winter?
In most cases, yes. A chip is usually repairable when:
- It is smaller than a quarter (about 2.5 cm)
- Any crack is shorter than 15 cm (6 inches)
- It is not directly in the driver's line of sight
- It is not at the edge of the glass, where stress is highest
If damage is larger or spreads across the edge, Windshield Replacement is the safer option. For newer vehicles with cameras behind the windshield for lane assist or emergency braking, replacement should include ADAS calibration so those safety systems work correctly.
How do you protect a chipped windshield until it is fixed?
If you cannot book a repair right away, these steps reduce the risk of spreading:
- Cover the chip with clear packing tape to keep out water and dirt
- Start the defroster on low and increase heat gradually
- Never pour hot water on a frozen windshield
- Scrape gently and avoid pressing directly on the chip
- Park in a garage or under cover when possible
- Close doors softly, since slamming sends vibration through the glass
- Skip automatic car washes until the chip is repaired
Is it safe to drive with a cracked windshield?
A cracked windshield is more than a cosmetic problem. The glass helps support the roof in a rollover and gives the passenger airbag a surface to deploy against. A weakened windshield may not perform as designed in a collision.
There is also a legal side. Drivers in Ontario are required under the Highway Traffic Act to keep a clear view through the windshield, and a crack in the driver's line of sight can lead to a ticket or a failed safety standards inspection.
Quick pre-winter windshield checklist
- Inspect your windshield in daylight for small chips or star breaks
- Replace worn wiper blades that can drag grit across the glass
- Top up with winter-rated washer fluid
- Book chip repairs before overnight temperatures drop below zero
